Press Release: Cook Political Report downgrades Radinovich’s chances as Stauber continues to build momentum
October 17, 2018
HERMANTOWN- The independent, non-partisan Cook Political Report, considered to be one of the nation’s most reputable firms analyzing congressional campaigns, downgraded Joe Radinovich’s chances in his congressional race against Pete Stauber for the 8th congressional district seat.
Cook moved the Stauber race from “Toss-Up” to “Lean Republican” after a series of setbacks, wrong turns, and revelations by Radinovich. In the assessment of the race, Dave Wasserman noted Radinovich is being pulled down by his unavoidable record that includes, “tax votes in the legislature and his traffic record, including five suspended licenses and a drug paraphernalia arrest.”
Cook’s downgrade of Radinovich’s campaign came within hours of the announcement that Joe’s Democrat allies were pulling out of the race, redirecting their funding and support that they originally reserved for 8th district advertising and now spending it elsewhere in races where they felt they had a chance to win. The news also follows a New York Times poll that showed Radinovich slipping dramatically.
Earlier this week, the Duluth News Tribune, the largest newspaper in the 8th district endorsed Stauber, saying “There’s no denying Pete Stauber’s impressive lifetime of public service or his unwavering devotion and commitment to us in Northeastern Minnesota and in the 8th Congressional District. All voters in the 8th District can embrace Stauber’s commitment to them, no matter their politics, confident he has made good on similar pledges made during a lifetime of devoted public service.”
The DNT endorsement wasn’t the first to back Stauber’s candidacy.ECM Newspapers and Adams Publishing which publish dozens of community newspapers throughout the region, endorsed Stauber last week. “In our opinion the edge goes to Stauber based on his broader, more diverse life experience,” their editorial said.
Stauber will be welcoming Lara Trump to North Branch on Thursday for a Get out the Vote really and will be holding a press conference in Duluth later that day highlighting another endorsement.
